The Vermont news about legal gay marriage is exciting, especially the part about how it’s the first gay marriage victory that was achieved through legislative action as opposed to a court decision.

But I kind of am more thrilled about Iowa joining our ranks of legal gay weddinging. (Wow, no spell check on weddinging, WordPress? Really?) As some gay stand-up comic’s joke goes: It’s as if God looked at the US and said, “Gay people, to the sides!” Having a Middle American state like Iowa allow gay marriage provides a lot of the water in this watershed moment in our country’s history. Within days the number of states to legalize gay marriage doubled!!! The house of conservative cards is tumbling and I look forward to similar victories in the very near future in Maine and New Hampshire.

There are a lot of people doing tireless work in this movement but I credit this moment in television with providing Middle America their first look into the everydayness of gay marriage:

If we queers can enjoy (and win!) an episode of Wheel of Fortune with our spouses or fiances, we can’t be all that bad.
